Here's the CD review of "Call Me Angel For Blues" by  Blues Revue Magazine (Oct/Nov 2007):

Call Me Angel for Blues (BOJA 22007) announces a major singing and songwriting talent in Florida's Julie Black. Shying away from 12-bar forms, she still hews close to the blues genre. "Feelin' Strange" is a little pop, a little jazz, yet all blues; "Call the Cards" a lovely, soulful ballad worthy of The Band or Tom Waits. "Blues Like Me" and "My Doggie Don't" mine the jazzy vein of Van Morrison's "Moondance"; "Hurt My Baby" and the sultry "Lean in On Me" take an R&B approach; "Spreadin' the Blues" is a gospel raveup; "Go & Get Her" recalls "Fever." There are straight blues tunes as well, such as "Love This Mama." The players and arrangements are excellent, and Black is a confident, expressive singer. Angel is beautiful.”

Newest Review from Steve Daniels of the Santa Barbara Blues Society

Call Me Angel For the Blues-Julie Black   BOJA  2007

Another female blues singer looking for attention? Well, this one deserves it! Julie Black is a singer and songwriter from Florida who allegedly has written over 400 songs. This is her first album, and it swings and sizzles. A new talent has arisen!

No artist arrives de novo; each reflects his or her influences. Black's vocal stylings suggest such antecedents as Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, perhaps Janiva Magness, and...surprisingly, Van Morrison. (Although Morrison is not primarily a bluesman in adherence to the 12-bar form of the blues, he certainly is a bluesman in the spiritual and emotional quality of his work. Listen to his duets with John Lee Hooker.) Black captures Morrison's jazzy inflections and his impeccable sense of swing, which is high praise indeed. Her vocals exhibit both smoothness and power.

There is not one bad cut on this album. The songs run the gamut from straight blues to gospel, R-&-B, and jazz, but all have the rootsy honesty and directness of blues. There's a refreshing touch of humor, also; what can you do when even your dog don't love you no more? A rotating group of musicians provide excellent back-up, particularly the guitarists and keyboard players. This has become one of my favorite releases of 2007.

Her voice has a classic vintage that pours easily over the rock-solid instrumentation of her band, who manage set the right mood for every style she samples. Black can whisper and she can wail, and can hold a note as steady as, say, Aretha Franklin.Black goes out on a limb with an album of originals, but it's a smart move: her songwriting is exuberant and seductive, eschewing a 12-bar format for standard-style tunes, and full of playful innuendo in songs like jazzy "My Doggie Don't" and "Go & Get Her," the latter channeling Lucinda Williams' indignant, slighted femininity. But it's the way Black hits every note at its dead center, and the strong texture of her voice, that make it so easy to fall under her spell. The album's fine tableau belongs as much to Black's band, and to very hip West Coast licks from guitarist Dave Eichenberger. Smart engineering kept engaging, spot-on musicianship from being squandered beneath the weight of her vocals, and the mix is a strong cocktail right where you need it — something finer than the sum of its parts. Julie Black, out of the Tampa Bay area, shows in this coming-out that she's got the stuff to go the distance. For the widespread pleasure of music lovers everywhere, we hope it's in the cards

Julie Black's debut, "Call me Angel for Blues," announces the warm arrival of a promising talent, in strong, rich colors and a voice that could leave a serious imprint on the heart. Not only blues devotees need beware: Julie Black will charm lovers of jazz, R&B, soul, and probably any other ears that wander into her range. She dabbles in genres, and though young (also rather stunning, judging by pictures in the liner notes— one would say she looks about 25) her writing and composition on the 12 songs that comprise this album demonstrate sophistication beyond her years.
